    A rare ocean phenomenon

What Is a Humpback Whale Supergroup?

Humpback Whales are usually seen alone, in pairs or in small pods. Off South Africa's Cape West Coast, however, they can gather in remarkable numbers to feed — loose aggregations of dozens of whales that researchers call supergroups. Watching blow after blow rise across the horizon is one of the most memorable marine wildlife sights in the country.

    The Benguela upwelling

The reason is the cold Benguela Current. Seasonal winds push surface water offshore, drawing cold, nutrient-rich water up from the deep. That fuels plankton blooms, krill and shoaling fish — and the whales follow the food. Between November and March these conditions make the waters off Yzerfontein one of the best places to search for feeding Humpback Whales.

Sightings depend on the whales themselves and on the sea on the day, so no encounter can be promised — but this is the season and the coastline where the odds are most in your favour.

    Full-day expedition

    The One-Day Humpback Whale Expedition

A longer, specialist day on the ocean — approximately 4–6 hours of boat-based whale watching, depending on sea and weather conditions.

    1. Morning welcome. Meet the crew in Yzerfontein for breakfast and a thorough briefing on safety, the day's sea conditions and responsible whale viewing, then collect your safety gear.
    2. Out on the Atlantic. The expedition vessel heads offshore and everyone helps scan for blows. With time on your side, there is a real chance to watch behaviour unfold — breaching, tail displays and surface feeding — along with dolphins and seabirds. Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are served on board.
    3. Back on shore. The day ends with a traditional South African braai lunch and a chance to talk through what you saw.

Humpback Whales are wild animals in the open ocean. Sightings and specific behaviours cannot be guaranteed.
