    Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai

Gansbaai is the shark cage diving capital of the world. The narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock — known locally as Shark Alley — concentrates more great white sharks per square kilometre than anywhere else.

Why Gansbaai for shark cage diving

Shark Alley sits between Dyer Island (60,000 Cape fur seals) and Geyser Rock. The fur seals are the prey base; great whites patrol the channel year-round. Visibility, action and shark count are all better here than in False Bay or Mossel Bay.

Tours run with one of three permitted Gansbaai operators we partner with — Marine Dynamics, White Shark Diving Company and White Shark Projects. All are PADI-licensed, all use surface-supplied air cages (no certification needed), and all contribute to ongoing shark research.

What the day actually looks like

Pickup from your Cape Town hotel at 05:30 (early start — sharks are most active in the morning). 2-hour scenic drive to Kleinbaai harbour via Hermanus. Safety briefing, breakfast, kit up. 25-minute boat transfer to Shark Alley. 2 hours on the water with multiple cage rotations. Light lunch back at the dive centre. Return to Cape Town by 17:00.

No diving experience or certification required — the cage stays at the surface and you breathe through the open top whenever the skipper signals 'down'.

Best time of year & shark sightings

Tours run year-round, but the peak great white sighting window is April–September when water clarity is best. From 2017–2022 sightings dropped due to orca predation of adult great whites; numbers have rebounded since 2023, and most days see between 1 and 6 shark interactions.

On the rare day with no shark sightings, all operators offer a free re-trip the following day.
