What the Cape Peninsula actually is
The Cape Peninsula is the mountainous stretch of land south of Cape Town, with the Atlantic on one side and False Bay on the other. It is a region, not a single attraction: Cape Point is one stop near its southern end.
A loop gives you both coasts, rather than an out-and-back drive to one viewpoint. Plan the stops and their order before setting off, especially if you want time at Boulders Beach.
The classic Peninsula route, in order
Heading south along the Atlantic seaboard: Sea Point and Camps Bay beneath the Twelve Apostles, then Hout Bay for a short scenic coffee stop, then Chapman's Peak Drive — a cliff-edge coastal road above the ocean. From Noordhoek the route crosses the Peninsula towards the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve.
Inside the reserve you can visit Cape Point, with its lighthouse above the cliffs, and the Cape of Good Hope signpost nearby. The two are separate landmarks in the same reserve.
The return leg runs up the False Bay side: Simon's Town, the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach, then Kalk Bay and Muizenberg back into the city. You can reverse the loop if road or weather conditions favour the other direction.
Cape Town to Cape Point: distance, driving time and a full-day plan
Cape Point is south of central Cape Town; the distance and drive time depend on whether you take a direct route or follow the longer coastal route through Camps Bay, Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak. Allow for traffic, weather and stops rather than relying on a single map estimate.
For the complete Peninsula loop, allow a full day — around 9 hours door-to-door when including stops. That allows time at Cape Point and Boulders Beach rather than photo-stop glances.
Adding Table Mountain, the city bowl or a winelands valley leaves less time for the Peninsula stops. Consider those as a separate day if you want an unhurried route.
Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope: two places in one reserve
Cape Point is the headland with the lighthouse and clifftop viewpoints. The Cape of Good Hope is a separate headland and signposted landmark nearby. Both lie within the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, so a single reserve entrance covers both stops.
Cape Point and Boulders Beach entrance fees
For international adults, the Cape Point / Cape of Good Hope reserve entrance fee is R515 and the separate Boulders Beach entrance fee is R245. The optional Flying Dutchman Funicular return fare is R115 when operating. These published rates are valid until 31 October 2026 and may change; check SANParks and the funicular operator for current rates and operating status before travelling.
The two reserve and beach entry fees add up to R760 per international adult; the total is R875 only if you choose the return funicular. These charges are separate from the South African Adventures tour price, as are meals, drinks and gratuities.
Check current conservation rates with SANParks and funicular fares with Cape Point before travelling.
Cape Point opening times
Reserve gate hours vary by season and can change. Check the current Cape of Good Hope section hours at sanparks.org before your visit, especially if you plan to arrive early or leave late. The Flying Dutchman Funicular and Boulders Beach have their own operating hours; confirm those separately rather than assuming they match the reserve gate.
See the official Cape Point visitor information for current gate and attraction hours.
Chapman's Peak Drive and alternative routes
Chapman's Peak Drive is the Atlantic-side scenic road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek. It can close during severe weather or rockfall risk. Check the official road status on the day; if closed, use an inland crossing such as Ou Kaapse Weg and allow your route and stop order to change.
Check Chapman's Peak Drive for road status.
Best time to visit the Cape Peninsula
The route can be visited year-round. Summer brings longer daylight and busier stops, while winter has shorter daylight and more variable weather. For an unhurried day, start early, check road and reserve conditions, and leave room for coastal weather to change.
