Table Mountain Tours & Guided Hikes

There is more than one way up Table Mountain, and the right one depends on your fitness, your head for heights and the weather on the day. This page compares the options — guided hiking routes, the cableway, abseiling off the summit and seeing the mountain as part of a Cape Town sightseeing day — then points you to the trip that fits.

The main ways to experience Table Mountain

A guided hike is the option most people are looking for: you walk up with a qualified mountain guide, at your pace, and usually ride the cableway back down. Our specific bookable hiking experience, with pricing and meeting details, is the Table Mountain guided hike page.

The cableway on its own suits travellers who want the summit views without the climb, or anyone short on time — it is also the standard way down after a hike, and we can help arrange the return ticket. Table Mountain abseiling is a separate add-on from the summit for guests who want the adrenaline rather than a longer walk. And if you would rather see the mountain from below as part of a broader day of sightseeing, it slots naturally into a private Cape Town day tour.

    Choosing your route

Platteklip Gorge is the classic direct ascent — relentlessly steep but not technical, and the shortest way to the top on foot. India Venster is far more scenic and involves exposed scrambling with chain and staple sections, so it is not for anyone uneasy with heights. Skeleton Gorge climbs out of Kirstenbosch through indigenous forest and is the gentlest gradient but the longest day. Lion's Head, next door, is the shorter sunrise or sunset alternative if a full Table Mountain ascent is more than you want.

Whichever route you pick, expect several hours of continuous uphill walking, bring proper trail shoes and at least two litres of water, and be honest with us about your fitness so we put you on the right trail.

Why hike Table Mountain with a guide?

Table Mountain National Park is one of the world's most biodiverse small reserves, but it's also notorious for fast-changing weather and routes that look easier on a map than they are on the ground. A qualified local guide knows the safest line for the conditions, the best photo stops and the small details that make the difference between a hike and an experience.

All of our guides are MDT-qualified (Mountain & Hiking Skills Training South Africa) with current wilderness first-aid certification and licensed by Cape Nature.

    Weather and closures

The mountain makes its own weather. Strong south-easterly wind closes the cableway at short notice, and cloud, rain or high wind can make an exposed route like India Venster unsafe even when the day looks fine in the city. If conditions turn, we move you to a safer route or another day rather than push on. Plan your mountain day early in your stay so there is room to reschedule.
