Why Plettenberg Bay for whale watching
Unlike Hermanus, which is dominated by southern right whales between June and November, Plettenberg Bay enjoys a year-round marine wildlife season. Humpback whales pass through on migration from June to early December, southern rights calve in the bay from July to November, and Bryde's whales are resident throughout the year.
Boat trips depart from Central Beach on permitted boat-based whale watching vessels — small enough to feel close to the action, stable enough for first-time boat passengers, and crewed by marine guides who know every resident pod by name.
