When to plan the Whale Coast
Southern right whales gather in Walker Bay roughly from June to November. Outside those months the Hermanus day still works for the coastal drive, Stony Point penguins and the town, but whales should not be the reason you go.
Boat-based whale watching is optional and not part of the day-tour price. Optional Hermanus boat-based whale watching — excluded from the day-tour price; From R1,500 pp (adult rate on our whale-watching page), seasonal and subject to sea conditions.
Why Clarence Drive?
The R44 Clarence Drive follows the edge of False Bay between mountains and sea. It is slower than the inland highway, which is why we use it on the way to Hermanus rather than squeezing it into a rushed half day.
Pacing four days
Hermanus and Cape Point are both full days with plenty of driving, so the Winelands day sits between coastal days and the city day ends the trip with a shorter half day — useful if you fly out that evening.
Official park fees — excluded, paid separately
Day 1 enters the Cape Point section and Boulders Beach in Table Mountain National Park. SANParks charges a daily conservation fee per person at the gate. The rates below are for international (non-South African) visitors and are valid 1 Nov 2026–31 Oct 2027. They are not part of any South African Adventures price or itinerary total; South African, resident and SADC visitors pay lower rates.

Frequently asked questions
- Are whales guaranteed in Hermanus?
- No. Whale season runs roughly June to November and sightings depend on the whales and the weather. We plan the day so you have the best chance, but we never guarantee wildlife.
- Is the whale-watching boat included?
- No. The boat trip is optional, booked separately and not part of the day-tour price or the itinerary total.
- Is pickup included?
- Yes. Each private day tour in this plan includes pickup and return in Cape Town City Centre.
- How long is the drive to Hermanus?
- Roughly 90 minutes each way on the direct road; the scenic Clarence Drive and stops add time, which the nine-hour day allows for.
