Cape Town Without a Car: How to Explore Without Self-Driving

Plenty of international visitors see Cape Town and the Western Cape without ever hiring a car. Here is how the options fit together, and where a guide makes the day easier.

Do you need a car in Cape Town?

Not necessarily. Within the city bowl, the V&A Waterfront and the Atlantic seaboard, app-based ride-hailing and short taxi trips cover most needs. For the Peninsula, Winelands and Whale Coast, a guided day tour removes the driving, parking and navigation entirely.

Driving is on the left in South Africa, which some visitors from the US, Canada and continental Europe prefer not to take on after a long flight.

    Your main options

    • Private day tours — your own vehicle and guide, with pickup and return in Cape Town City Centre.
    • Shared day tours — a seat on a scheduled departure; the most economical choice for solo travellers and couples once a departure's minimum is met.
    • Private transfers — airport, hotel and inter-city transfers, quoted on request.
    • Ride-hailing and taxis — practical for short hops in and around the city.

Places that are easier with a guide

Cape Point, Hermanus and the West Coast are long days with several stops; a guide handles timing, parking and the order of stops around wind and crowds. In the Winelands, not driving means everyone can enjoy the tastings.

    Airport and between-town transfers

We arrange airport pickups and point-to-point transfers to places such as Hermanus and the Winelands. Transfer prices are quoted for your group and luggage rather than published as a fixed rate.

What tours include — and don't

Private full-day tours start at R5,000 total for 1–2 guests and include the vehicle, guide and pickup and return in Cape Town City Centre. Entrance fees, tastings, meals and gratuities are separate.
