From sunrise on Lion's Head to the spine of Table Mountain, here are the ten Cape Town hikes our guides walk again and again — with routes, times, difficulty and what to bring.
Cape Town is a hiker's city. Within thirty minutes of the centre you can be standing on a granite summit watching the Atlantic curl around the Cape Peninsula, or threading through fynbos so quiet you can hear sunbirds dipping into proteas. After a decade of leading guests up these mountains, here are the ten hikes we still walk on our days off — ranked by what they actually deliver, not by Instagram fame.
Quick comparison: which hike is right for you?
- Short & iconic (1–2 hrs): Lion's Head, Pipe Track
- Moderate half-day (3–5 hrs): Platteklip Gorge, Kasteelspoort, Skeleton Gorge, Chapman's Peak
- Full-day & technical (5–8 hrs): India Venster, Kloof Corner & Tafelberg, Cape Point traverse
- Family-friendly: Newlands Forest, Kirstenbosch contour paths
1. Lion's Head — Cape Town's signature sunset
If you only do one hike in Cape Town, do this one. The 2.5km loop spirals up the volcanic plug between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, with chains and ladders near the top. Time it for sunset and you'll watch the city, the Atlantic seaboard and the Twelve Apostles light up in copper one after the other. Avoid full moon nights unless you enjoy queues.
Route at a glance
- Distance: 5km return · Elevation: 350m
- Time: 1.5–2 hours return
- Difficulty: Moderate — ladders & a short scramble
- Start: Signal Hill Road parking
2. Platteklip Gorge — the original Table Mountain ascent
The most direct way up Table Mountain — and one of the only routes safe to walk without a guide. It's a relentless stone staircase, but the reward is real: 1,067 metres of granite under your feet and the option to ride the cable car back down. Start before 8am in summer; this gorge bakes.
3. Kasteelspoort — the secret Table Mountain route
Our personal favourite. Kasteelspoort starts above Camps Bay and climbs through silver trees and proteas to the Twelve Apostles ridge. You'll pass the famous 'diving board' rock, the old WW2 cableway ruins, and a section of plateau most tourists never see. Pair it with a cable-car descent and a sundowner in Camps Bay.
4. India Venster — for confident scramblers only
Steep, exposed and unforgettable. India Venster shoots straight up Table Mountain's front face with chains, ledges and one heart-rate-spiking ladder. Not for vertigo sufferers, not for solo first-timers — but with a guide it's the most photogenic ascent in the city.
5. Skeleton Gorge & Maclear's Beacon
Start under Outeniqua yellowwoods in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and emerge eight kilometres later at the highest point on Table Mountain. Cool, lush, often empty.
6. Chapman's Peak hike (above the drive)
Most visitors only drive Chappies. The hike above it gives you Hout Bay on one side, Noordhoek's endless white beach on the other and almost zero crowds.
7. Cape Point traverse
An end-to-end coastal walk inside the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Eland, ostrich, baboons, and the smashing waves where the Atlantic and False Bay meet.
8. Kloof Corner & Tafelberg Road circuit
A quick afternoon win — straight up the buttress, along the contour path, and back. Best two hours you can spend within fifteen minutes of the V&A Waterfront.
9. Pipe Track
Mostly flat, hugging the Twelve Apostles. Perfect for jet lag or sunset photography.
10. Newlands Forest
Old-growth forest on the eastern slopes — shaded, gentle, and a quiet alternative when the south-easter is howling on the front face.
