Cape Town is hikeable all year, but each season demands a different plan. Here is what the weather actually does month by month, and when to walk each trail.

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate: dry, hot summers and cool, wet winters. That is the opposite of most of South Africa, and it is the single most useful fact for planning a hiking trip here. Rain falls mainly between May and August, and the wind blows hardest between November and February.

    Summer: December to February

Daytime highs of 26 to 32°C, almost no rain, and long daylight from about 05:30 to 20:00. The south-easterly wind is at its strongest and the UV index reaches extreme levels by mid-morning. Hike at sunrise, or from late afternoon into sunset, and choose shaded or coastal routes such as Newlands Forest, Cecilia Forest and the Pipe Track when the wind is up.

    Autumn: March to May

If you can choose your dates, come now. Temperatures settle into the low twenties, the wind drops, the light turns golden and the first rains green the fynbos without making rock slippery. Every route in this guide is at its best, and the trails are quieter than in peak summer.

    Winter: June to August

Cold fronts arrive every few days, bringing rain, wind and low cloud — and between them, some of the clearest hiking days of the year, with visibility from Table Mountain stretching to the Hottentots Holland range. Waterfalls in Skeleton Gorge and Cecilia run full. Daytime temperatures sit between 12 and 18°C. Check the forecast each morning, and remember this is also peak southern right whale season in Hermanus and Walker Bay — a hike-and-whales day works beautifully.

    Spring: September to November

Wildflowers transform the Peninsula, Table Mountain's slopes and, spectacularly, the West Coast National Park in August and September. Temperatures are moderate and the south-easter starts to build. A superb time for combining a morning hike with a West Coast wildflower day tour.

    Sunrise hikes

Sunrise is our preferred slot year-round: still air, cool temperatures, an empty summit and the city lighting up beneath you. Lion's Head, Kloof Corner and Devil's Peak are the classics. Start 60 to 90 minutes before sunrise and carry a headtorch.

    Sunset hikes

Sunset on Lion's Head is a Cape Town institution, especially near full moon, when the moon rises over the city as the sun drops into the Atlantic. It is busy, sociable and unforgettable. Always carry a headtorch and warm layer — the descent happens in the dark and the temperature falls quickly.

Wind, temperature and what it means for your plan

    • South-easter above 30km/h: avoid Lion's Head, ridges and the Twelve Apostles; move to forest routes.
    • North-wester with rain: sandstone becomes slick — postpone chain and ladder routes such as India Venster.
    • Clear, still winter morning: the best possible conditions for a full Table Mountain traverse.
    • Heat above 30°C: hike before 08:00 and carry an extra litre of water.

Planning around the weather with a guide

We watch the forecast for you and swap routes on the morning if conditions demand it, which is the main reason guided hikes rarely get cancelled outright. Tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what the mountain is likely to be doing.
