Walker Bay's southern right whale season runs June to November. Here's the month-by-month version a local guide would tell you.

Hermanus is the best place on earth for land-based whale watching. Walker Bay's sheltered inshore waters sit directly on the southern right whale migration path — pregnant females arrive in early June to calve metres from the cliff path, and the action peaks in late September.

    Month-by-month whale season

    June

First pregnant females arrive. Numbers low but sightings building. Quiet on the cliff path.

    July

Calving in full swing. First calves visible. Good boat-based viewing days. Cooler weather.

    August

Calving peaks. Mother-and-calf pairs everywhere. Males begin to arrive.

    September

PEAK surface activity. Courtship groups, breaching, lobtailing, spy-hopping. Spring weather. Best month to visit.

    October

Still excellent. Hermanus Whale Festival (last weekend of Sept / first of Oct). Activity peaks and starts to taper.

    November

Whales leaving for Antarctic feeding grounds. Late departures still visible. Warmer weather, fewer crowds.

    Land-based vs boat-based — which to pick

Free, intimate and astonishingly close: the Hermanus cliff path. Whales calve within 30–40 m of shore. We combine it with a boat-based trip (permitted operators only) for guests who want the on-water experience. Both on the same day is the ideal.

Where to watch: Hermanus, Walker Bay Gansbaai or Dyer Island

The same June-to-November season covers three different South African Adventures trips along one stretch of Overberg coast, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing between them is really a choice of water, not of season.

    Hermanus, Walker Bay

The land-based option, plus a boat trip with permitted operators. Southern right cows and calves come within 30–40 m of the cliff path, so this is the choice if you want free clifftop viewing, a full day from Cape Town, and the option of wine in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley afterwards.

Gansbaai whale watching — Walker Bay, from Gansbaai Harbour

A boat trip that stays inside the bay along the De Kelders cliffs, focused on southern right cows and calves sheltering close inshore. Roughly 2 hours on the water, about 2.5 hours at the harbour. Best in the calving and courtship months, June through November.

Gansbaai whale watching — Dyer Island, from Kleinbaai Harbour

A different trip from a different harbour about 8 km along the same coast: offshore into the greater Dyer Island ecosystem, Geyser Rock and Shark Alley. This one is a year-round Marine Big 5 ecosystem trip — seals, penguins, sharks and dolphins — with whales added in season, so it is the better choice outside the June–November window.

Many guests do two of the three: one day inside the bay, one day offshore. If you only have one day and it falls between June and November, Hermanus or the Walker Bay trip will put you closest to mothers and calves.

    Combine your whale watching

The Overberg coast is dense with marine wildlife. From Hermanus you can add Gansbaai shark cage diving (30 minutes east), Hemel-en-Aarde valley wines (15 minutes inland) and a Dyer Island Marine Big 5 boat safari — all on a 2-day private itinerary.
