The Peninsula is a region and Cape Point is a landmark on its route. Here's how to plan the difference.
Cape Point and the Cape Peninsula are often used interchangeably in trip names, but they describe different things. The Peninsula is the wider coastal region; Cape Point is a headland within it. The stops on any day trip depend on its itinerary, not its name.
The difference on a map
The Cape Peninsula stretches south of Cape Town between the Atlantic and False Bay. Cape Point is near its southern end, inside the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park. The Cape of Good Hope is a separate nearby headland within the same reserve.
Stops to check when planning
- Chapman's Peak Drive and Hout Bay on the Atlantic side, if the road is open
- Cape Point lighthouse and the separate Cape of Good Hope landmark
- Boulders Beach African penguins on the False Bay return leg
- Kalk Bay and Muizenberg, depending on the route and time available
