Everything you need to plan an adventure trip to South Africa: when to go, where to fly into, top experiences, what to budget, and how to put it all together.

South Africa packs more landscapes, climates and bucket-list experiences into one country than almost anywhere else on Earth. You can dive with great whites in the morning, summit a sandstone mountain in the afternoon and eat a five-course tasting menu in a Cape Dutch wine estate that evening. Here's the field-tested playbook our team gives every guest planning their first trip.

    When to visit

    • Nov–Mar (summer): peak season — long days, hot, busy, the Cape at its best
    • Apr–May (autumn): our favourite — warm, dry, calmer crowds
    • Jun–Aug (winter): whale season + best safari in Kruger (dry, animals concentrate at waterholes)
    • Sep–Oct (spring): wildflowers in the Cape, peak whale watching

    Where to fly into

Two main hubs: Cape Town (CPT) for the Cape, Garden Route and adventure activities; Johannesburg (OR Tambo) for Kruger safari, Drakensberg and Soweto. The classic itinerary is an open-jaw — fly into one, out of the other.

    Top adventure experiences

    1. 1Shark cage diving in Gansbaai
    2. 2Whale watching in Hermanus (June–November)
    3. 3Hiking Table Mountain or Lion's Head
    4. 4Surfing at Muizenberg
    5. 5Big 5 safari (Aquila from Cape Town, or Kruger)
    6. 6Wine tasting in Stellenbosch & Franschhoek
    7. 7Penguin colony at Boulders Beach
    8. 8Garden Route road trip
    9. 9Skydiving or paragliding above the Cape
    10. 10Sardine Run on the Wild Coast (June–July)

    How long do you need?

    • 5 days: Cape Town highlights + Cape Peninsula
    • 7–10 days: Cape Town + Winelands + Hermanus + Gansbaai
    • 14 days: Add Garden Route + a 3-day safari
    • 21 days: Add Kruger, Drakensberg or Wild Coast

    Costs & budgeting

South Africa is exceptional value compared with Europe or the US. Mid-range private guided travel — 4-star hotels, private vehicle, guided tours, dinners with wine — typically runs USD 150–300 per person per day. Backpacker travel can be done on USD 50–80 per day; full luxury safari lodges climb past USD 800.

    Visas, vaccinations & money

Most Western passports get a free 90-day visa on arrival. No vaccinations are mandatory (yellow-fever certificate required only if arriving from an infected country). The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR); card payments are accepted almost everywhere.
