Two of South Africa's finest wine valleys, an hour apart. Which one to pick — or how to do both in one day.
This is the most-asked question we get from anyone planning a Cape Town wine day. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are South Africa's two most famous wine valleys, they're 30 minutes apart, and they're genuinely different products. Here's the local version.
Stellenbosch — the bigger, wine-led valley
South Africa's oldest and largest wine region. 200+ estates, granite soils, a serious university town as its anchor. Strengths: Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style red blends, Chenin Blanc. Estates like Kanonkop, Rust en Vrede, Tokara, Delaire Graff.
Franschhoek — the smaller, food-led valley
Founded by French Huguenots in 1688. Smaller (about 30 estates) but very high quality density. Home of Cap Classique (SA's bottle-fermented sparkling). Food capital — La Petite Colombe, The Werf, Babel, Wolfgat-trained chefs everywhere. More walkable, more boutique.
Side-by-side
- Distance from Cape Town: Stellenbosch 45 min · Franschhoek 75 min
- Style: Stellenbosch wine-first · Franschhoek food-first
- Walkability: Franschhoek is genuinely walkable; Stellenbosch needs a driver
- Pricing: R5,000 total for 1–2 guests, then +R1,000 per additional guest up to 12 for a standard private full-day tour
- Crowds: both busy in season — book ahead, especially for top restaurants
Or do both in one day
Our two-valley private tour visits 2 estates in Stellenbosch (typically a Cabernet specialist and a flagship estate) and 2 in Franschhoek (a Cap Classique house and a food estate for lunch). Drive over Helshoogte Pass between valleys — itself one of the prettiest stretches in the Cape.
