Two cage diving destinations, two different shark species. Which one is right for your day from Cape Town?
Cape Town has two operational shark cage diving destinations — Gansbaai and Simon's Town (False Bay). They're not interchangeable. Different species, different distances, different days.
Gansbaai — Shark Alley, great whites
The narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock is the densest concentration of great white sharks on earth. After a dip in sightings 2017–2022 (orca predation) the population has rebounded and most days now see 1–6 shark interactions. Bronze whaler and copper sharks are also regular. Full-day from Cape Town, departing 05:30, back 17:00.
False Bay (Simon's Town) — sevengill cow sharks
False Bay shark cage diving targets the broadnose sevengill cow shark — a primitive, beautifully-patterned species found in only a handful of places worldwide. Curious, intimate encounters in shallow kelp water. Half-day from Cape Town, departing 06:30, back 13:00.
