Surfski has a reputation for being unforgiving. In reality the hard part lasts about half an hour — here is what actually determines how quickly you progress.

Surfski looks difficult because racing skis are extraordinarily narrow and elite paddlers make big water look easy. The version a visitor experiences on a guided tour is a different proposition: a wide boat, sheltered water and a guide alongside.

    The learning curve

    • First 30 minutes: wobbly, tense, occasionally in the water. Entirely normal.
    • First session: paddling in a straight line, steering with the feet, remounting confidently.
    • Three to five sessions: comfortable in small chop, starting to catch short runs.
    • Ten-plus sessions: enjoying a genuine downwind run rather than holding on.

Why it feels unstable at first

Stability on a surfski is dynamic: the boat is stable while you are moving and paddling, and least stable when you stop and stiffen up. Beginners instinctively tense their hips to fight the movement, which transfers every wobble straight into the boat. Relaxing the hips and keeping the blade in the water are the two fixes, and both feel counter-intuitive for the first twenty minutes.

    Beginner skis make the difference

An entry-level ski is around 50 to 55cm wide with a lower seat, compared with roughly 42cm on an elite boat. That difference converts a balance exercise into an ordinary paddle. Every guest on our beginner sessions uses a stable ski matched to their weight and height.

    Fitness and strength

Surfski is an endurance sport driven by the torso and legs. Arms fatigue quickly if you paddle with them, which is the single most common beginner complaint. Reasonable general fitness is plenty for a two-hour guided paddle; sore shoulders after a session almost always signals technique rather than lack of strength.

    Common beginner mistakes

    1. 1Looking down at the boat instead of at the horizon.
    2. 2Gripping the paddle too tightly and locking the hips.
    3. 3Pulling with the arms instead of rotating the torso.
    4. 4Stopping paddling when nervous — the moment stability is lowest.
    5. 5Choosing a ski that is too narrow too soon.
    6. 6Going out in an offshore wind without a guide.

    How to progress

Paddle regularly in small doses and add conditions gradually with professional guidance. Miller's Run runs from Miller's Point to Fish Hoek in suitable south-easterly conditions. It remains a specialist ocean route: suitable guests may join an assessed guide-assisted double, while single-surfski paddlers need appropriate ocean experience and remounting ability.
