Short, shaded and genuinely scenic walks that work with children — where to park, where to picnic, how long each takes and what to watch out for.

Hiking with children in Cape Town works best when the walk has a destination: a waterfall, a viewpoint, a stream to paddle in or a lawn to eat lunch on. These are the routes we recommend to families, all of them under two hours at a child's pace and all with easy parking.

    Easy forest walks

    Newlands Forest

Shaded, sheltered from the wind and full of streams and stepping stones. The Woodcutters Trail is gentle and wide enough to walk side by side. Perfect on a hot or windy day when the mountain is unpleasant.

    Cecilia Forest

Gravel paths and a waterfall at the top of the main loop after winter rain. Around two hours at a family pace, with the option to turn back at any point. Good for older children who want a real climb.

    Tokai and Constantia Nek paths

Wide, flat, pram-friendly forest tracks with picnic areas near the start — the easiest introduction to walking in Cape Town for toddlers.

Scenic viewpoints without a hard climb

    • Pipe Track — flat contour path with continuous Atlantic views; walk out 30 minutes and return.
    • Kloof Corner — a short, steep 30 to 40 minute climb to one of the best city views; suitable for confident older children only, as there are drop-offs.
    • Signal Hill — a short stroll from the car park for sunset over the Atlantic.
    • Cape Point and Boulders coastal paths — easy walking, lighthouse funicular and African penguins in one outing.

    Best picnic spots

    • Kirstenbosch lawns — the classic, with the Boomslang canopy walkway for children.
    • Newlands Forest stream crossings — shade, water and rocks to scramble on.
    • Tokai picnic area — tables, space and gentle paths.
    • Silvermine reservoir — a short walk to a swimmable dam in summer, with easy paths and huge views.

    Safety with children

    • Keep young children within arm's reach at any viewpoint; Cape Town's viewpoints are unfenced.
    • Pack food out of sight on Peninsula and Silvermine walks — baboons will approach children carrying visible snacks.
    • Sun protection matters more for children: hats, SPF 30 to 50 and a shaded lunch stop.
    • Carry more water than you think you need and start early in summer.
    • Walk as a family group and stay on marked paths.

    Family hikes with a guide

We run relaxed family hiking mornings with transport from your hotel, a pace set by the youngest walker, and a guide who can name every flower, bird and dassie you meet. Combine one with an afternoon at Boulders penguins or a Peninsula drive for a full, easy day.
